Atlanta Habitat for Humanity’s Veterans Initiative helps U.S. veterans, military service members and their families build through our proven program for qualified homebuyers, improve their current homes by completing critical home repairs, and use their skills and talent to give back to their community through volunteering. As an Atlanta Habitat partner family, veterans also can participate in education classes offered by our organization. Atlanta Habitat believes the brave men and women who serve our country should have a safe, affordable place to call home. At the same time, they play a key role in helping us build community and change lives.
Build. Through its Veterans Initiative, Atlanta Habitat is reaching out to the nearly 4 million families of veterans who spend more than 30 percent of their income on housing. We are currently seeking veteran families that may qualify for our homeownership program in which quality, energy-efficient homes are sold through no-interest loans to homebuyers who meet program requirements.
Critical Home Repair. Through our Repair With Kindness program, Atlanta Habitat helps qualified, non-Habitat homeowners make critical home repairs and improvements. Repair may include weatherproofing, handicap-accessible ramps and roofs that help make homes safe and healthy. In April, The Home Depot Foundation granted Atlanta Habitat $195,000 to complete repairs for more than a dozen veteran families as part of its $5 million pledge for critical home repairs for Atlanta senior military veterans. Since 2011, the Foundation has focused its philanthropic efforts on improving the homes and lives of U.S. military veterans. Veterans interested in Repair With Kindness must own and live in the house and must meet all requirements for the program.
Volunteer. Individuals and veterans organizations – including Wounded Warriors; Team Rubicon, Team Red, White and Blue; and The Mission Continues – have contributed valuable volunteer hours on build sites and in the Atlanta Habitat ReStore. To volunteer as an individual, please visit atlantahabitat.org/individuals. To volunteer as a group, contact firstname.lastname@example.org or 404.465.1016.
Education. Any veteran participating in Atlanta Habitat’s program has access to over 100 courses in homeownership, financial literacy and life skills that we provide annually. Atlanta Habitat’s proven education program includes courses such as Resume Writing, Community Involvement, Insurance and Banking. For more information, call 404-223-5180, ext. 177.
