The Red Star with the BIG Heart: 2017 Macy’s Brush with Kindness

Just as she and her grandson were deciding to buy paint and give her home a much-needed face lift, Atlanta Habitat stepped in with Macy’s to do just that for Gwendolyn Walter, an 18-year Atlanta Habitat homeowner. “They came right in the nick of time,” she says. Atlanta Habitat’s Brush with Kindness program pairs sponsors with qualified Atlanta Habitat homeowners who have been in their homes for 10 or more years, whose homes need a fresh coat of paint. Macy’s–a retail giant known for its red star logo and huge “One Day” sales–has completed six Brush with Kindness projects.

“Having my house painted felt like getting a brand-new pair of shoes,” says Valerie Dixon, who has owned her home for 21 years. “It looks just like new!” Both Walter and Dixon agree, the Macy’s volunteers went beyond the call of duty and saved them time and money.

With both Macy’s and Atlanta Habitat’s commitment to transform communities in positive ways, the yearly Brush with Kindness events amplify our efforts for “build the block” and revitalize neighborhoods.
