Homeownership: HOME Room

Two HOME Room classes are offered to each homebuyer.  These practical, hands-on workshops rotate through nine training stations, each a replica of an area of an Atlanta Habitat house, from the kitchen to the utility room to the front porch.

The first HOME Room class is taken when the homebuyer first moves into his/her house, providing the homebuyer with basic home repair and maintenance tips.  The second HOME Room class is taken when the homebuyer is ready to close on his/her house. It expands upon and reinforces the information provided during the first class.  Homeowners are also invited to come back to attend the second HOME Room class as a “refresher”, one year after they have closed on their homes. An Atlanta Habitat Houseleader or a skilled volunteer leads the workshop providing over 100 tips on basic home repair and maintenance.  Tips include how to repair a leaky faucet, adjust the control on the water heater, reattach a roof shingle, patch a hole in the wallboard, change the fire alarm battery and more.

At the completion of the workshops, all homeowners take home a Maintenance Manual that covers what they have learned, so that they can review and realistically apply the skills in their own home. After the class, homebuyers are equipped with the skills, confidence and independence to maintain their homes without resorting to costly contractors or settling for unfinished jobs.
