Habitat for Humanity International to open hundreds of new ReStores

On Dec. 8, Central Fulton Master Gardeners (CFMG) will celebrate its 100th Atlanta Habitat for Humanity home. By the end of this year, CFMG master gardeners will have contributed more than 1,700 volunteer hours and directed and educated over 3,500 Atlanta Habitat volunteers in landscaping and plant care.

Over the past 10 years, Atlanta Habitat’s Atlanta Interfaith Build has brought together more than 30 congregations from six religions to build homes for six Atlanta families.

Atlanta Habitat for Humanity is pleased to welcome six AmeriCorps members who have joined us to help forward our mission of affordable homeownership to qualified families in the city of Atlanta and surrounding area.

Beginning next week, dozens of Atlanta women will come together to construct a safe, energy-efficient home for a working Atlanta family. The 2012 Atlanta Women’s Build takes place Aug. 18 – Oct. 6, continuing a growing city tradition of women building Atlanta Habitat homes for women.

The Atlanta Habitat for Humanity ReStore is teaming with up popular blogger “Pretty Handy Girl” to present a dynamic workshop on Saturday, June 23, at 2:00 p.m. Brittany, aka Pretty Handy Girl, has outfitted her own home with unique items she found at the ReStore and tells how you can take diamonds in the rough and make true gems for your home. Her workshop will give people ideas on ways they can create custom items for their homes and offices.

Atlanta Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps National and VISTA members will travel to Dallas, Texas, May 20–26 to participate in Habitat for Humanity International’s annual AmeriCorps Build-a-Thon. This year’s build will engage more than 400 AmeriCorps members from 36 states and will highlight local community needs for affordable housing and the members’ service with Habitat.

he Atlanta Habitat for Humanity ReStore has received dozens of great outdoor items just in time for spring. Beginning Saturday, March 17, the ReStore will be donning green in honor of St. Patrick’s Day and the coming of the spring season.

As a result of its commitment to and work with women sponsors, volunteers, and homeowners, Atlanta Habitat for Humanity has been chosen as a tour-site for 11 senior journalists from the Caribbean who are interested in women’s empowerment.

Atlanta Habitat is pleased to announce that Dan Maddox is joining the organization as vice president of operations. Maddox comes from a 27-year career at Georgia-Pacific Corporation (GP), where he most recently has been vice president GP Harmon International, Rolls Division, India Business. Prior to his years at GP, he was senior manager at Arthur Andersen and Company (Accenture). His will begin his new position on Feb. 27.

Volunteers from 11 congregations and three universities will come together in Atlanta Habitat for Humanity’s first-annual Young Adult Faith Build for people in their 20s and 30s. The build will include faith communities from around the city to complete a home in seven days. Build days are Saturdays and/or Sundays from Aug. 13-Oct. 1.

Business to Business magazine names Martin and Bixler Women of Excellence

Atlanta Habitat for Humanity is pleased to announce that women leaders Larrie Del Martin, president and CEO, and board member Susan Bixler have been selected as Women of Excellence by Business to Business magazine.

The Warrick Dunn Family Foundation (WD-FF), a public charity serving single-parent families in Atlanta, Ga., Baton Rouge, La., Tallahassee and Tampa, Fl., rewarded a single mother for achieving financial independence by becoming a first-time homebuyer through its Homes for the Holidays (HFTH) program on Thursday morning.

A new Atlanta Habitat for Humanity home will be dedicated this Saturday, May 21st, 2011 at 12 pm. This home, built for new homebuyer Betty Smith and her family, is a special home sponsored by the Atlanta Women’s Build.
